Depending on the water quality, the quartz sleeve may require periodic cleaning. At a minimum, the quartz sleeve should be cleaned on an annual basis. The following steps outline a basic cleaning procedure.
If there is no outlet shut-off valve, expect water to drain from the system as the head pressure in the system will cause the water to flow back down.
Defender systems also have a drain plug installed on the bottom of the UV reactor. After releasing the water pressure at a faucet, remove this plug to ensure the system is fully drained.
CAUTION: If using the Defender system with a water reservoir tank, be sure to close the supply valve leading away from the tank to prevent gravity fed water from shooting through the UV during the replacement process.
Disconnect the lamp connector from the lamp. CAUTION: The lamp may be hot.
NOTE: Using gloves while handling the lamp will prevent damage.
CAUTION: The sleeve can break if it is in a bind. There is a spring in the quartz sleeve. BE SURE not to lose the spring.
Alcohol wipes will work as well. This removes scaling or iron deposits that may be on the outside of the quartz sleeve. Be careful not to get any moisture or liquids inside of the sleeve.
CAUTION: Be sure to put the quartz sleeve in the chamber straight. The sleeve can break if it is put in a bind.
Allow the system to pressurize and check for leaks. Repair leaks as necessary.
Be sure not to touch the lamp. It is best to wear gloves when handling the lamp.
NOTE: The connector will only fit on the lamp one way. Make sure you have the plug installed properly.
